The whirlwind of getting there is over and you’ve just fallen onto your new bed. For the next 13 weeks or so, this is home and while the environment may be foreign, it’s all still feeling comfortable.
But don’t fall asleep yet. You’ve just arrived in your new destination, but there are still a couple of things you need to take care of in your temporary home. Here's our list of everything you need to tackle upon reaching your assignment housing.
* Charge your gadgets. Some people are good about plugging their phone charger into the wall as soon as they can, others ... aren’t. Make this priority number one — you’ll want your phone later — and now is also a good time to charge your tablet, camera and any other devices you brought along.
* Store the valuables. Theft is always a concern, but in a new location, so is simply losing the things you hold most dear. Peruse your new location and find a spot where your valuables will be safe and store them immediately. You can also take a picture of the location on your phone, you know, just in case you forget where you put it all.
* Check in. A quick call to loved ones to let them know you arrived is a nice touch and will make you feel more at home immediately. This is also a good time to check in with your staffing agency if you thought of any final questions while you were on the plane or since you’ve landed.
* Take a drive. You’re not going to work yet, but the first day isn’t a bad time to take a little test drive to the facility. This will allow you to map the path and find a good spot to park. Depending on the time, it may also allow you to see what you can expect for daily traffic.
Any or all of these four tips are great things to check off your list on the first day. What else do you like to do on your first day in a new location?
